Optical Illusion

I did a optical illusion using google draws.

I got a shape and copied and paste and made a cool illusion and then I made another one using a different kind of.

 I like doing this task.

What are you doing today?

This task was what are you doing today?

It was an Te Reo Maori task. I had to place the Maori word where I think is the best spot to put.

I had to put a Maori word from the muiltable word I could pick and I picked tātahi and I think that means beach.

I had fun doing this task.

Kowhaiwhai Patterns

This week for Summer Learning Journey I made a koru art by using the copy and paste button it took me some thinking to do. I made waves and it looks liek this. I changed the background to represent summer.

I made a insect art by using natures leafs and stick and other materials it was more likely a scavenger hunt but fnd leaf and stuff. What I made was a butterfly, I used different materials and thinking to do.

I got a comment by Fiona from SLJ team. She asked what do I think I can make out of the material. I reply asking what I think it would be and how many comments I did. I can believe that a SLJ team commented on my blog post.

This comment was my fiveth comment and Haylee had a great blog post about comment blog post and saying, if she is ready for a next task for Summer Learning Journey.

I commented on Akuhata's blog post and he did his operation christmas drop. I asked him if that task was hard.

I like doing comments to peoples blog post.

I commented on Victoria christmas decorations blog post and asking if she was happy doing this task.

I comment on Matthew's blog on his Summer Learning Journey Blog post. I asked him what does he think he can make out of the items he had in this blog post.

Fishy False Teeth Kick Start

For this activity I did a task called Fishy False Teeth Kick Start.

I had to read a article about the Fishing False Teeth, complete the template to help me understand the text. Watch a video. Imagine if the characters spoke what they might say and create your own comic - use the template below, Comix or other Comic Strip creator. In your own words add what you think the characters are saying?

The first task was to read a artical and answer the questions on the slide asking, who are the charaters, what part did they play in the story and what was the outcome for them.

Then I watched a video and typed in what I think the charaters are saying.

I love this activity and want to do the next one.

Summer Learning Journey

For SLJ ( Summer Learning Journey) We went on a material hunt.

We had to find paper, empty bottle, something heavy, tin cardboard, hard cardboard, and other things. If we didn't find the materials we could find something kind of same and use it.

We took photos and pictures on screencastify and webcam. We had to record the materials that we find and take a photo of all of the materials.

The material we found was yellow paper, plasic cups, tin cardboard, coca cola can, tape, ruler and others.

We have all the stuff we need now we need to build something next Monday.

Sorry we can't upload the video.

Kapa Haka

This week we watched a performance by a Kapa Haka group.

First they did a special ceremony to welcome us.

Then they used this special shell. It's to warn there tribe that people are near by.

Next they told us about the poi and taiaha. The taiaha is to frighten of the enemy. The poi is for dancing or performing.

After we played Matau and Maui. Matau means you go right Maui means you go left.

I enjoyed this performance i'd like to see it again because it scared me.

People Names

This week we carried on peoples names from the past two weeks.

First I went to Whea Odie and she gave card with a Maori word on them. Then she said the names that we had and we would say anie. Anie means here

The blue text means its a boys name in Maori. The black text means its a girl in Maori. We had a list of names to work with and we also searched in the Maori Dictionary to find the name in English. Some Maori.

I finished with all right and we didn't get to do the convisation document but I did good on the peoples names.

Touch Rugby | Two and Three man settle

We carried on two and three man settle from last week.

First we practised two and three man settles to get ready for a game of touch. Couch Mark told us to aim for one person when we drive the ball down the field.

Next we played a game of touch. The game was for learning how to play and how to use a two and three man settle

I was really good at two man settles but, I wasn't good at three man settles. I need to practise more three man settles next week.

Emergency Shelters

Emergency Shelters.

The inquiry task was to write down the materials that are needed for the storm shelter that is going to be built.

In total there are 9 materials that could protect against storm shelter. There are three main materials that are important to use for protecting the shelter and which are concrete, chicken wires, and rubber bracelets. We chose concrete because it is not easy to break apart. We chose chicken wires because it can keep the shelter stable. We chose rubber bracelets because it can stop electricity.

The other six materials are: cotton balls, aluminum, popsicle sticks, duck tape, hard plastic, and steel.  All 9 materials are important for defending the shelter and could be useful for something in danger.

We figured out the amount was because we drew the shelter and drew our materials. We kept on filling the whole until it was finished. For example: For concrete, the height is 18cm and the width is 20cm. There are four walls and the floor. So there are five and five places to use the concrete. That’s how we figured out the concrete can be used.

Emergency shelters are really important when it comes to floods and different kinds of storms.

Storyboard

A storyboard is drawings and shows the characters movments, the camera angles, and the story settings.

The images should show enough detail so the reader can know where the setting is without someone telling them. People film different angles and show emotions on the characters face to make it interesting.

A storyboard is when writing scenes in different place from the narrative. Some people add sentences to give it more detail for the picture. A person who draws a storyboard knows if he does a good job. Someone can tell where the setting is.

How to write a storyboard is important part because it can help actors understand how it flows. Storyboards help people visualise the surroundings and enviroment.

Shelter Planning.

This week we had to find materials for our shelters. My group chose cotton, aluminum, concrete, plasterboard, nails and brick.

Next we had to find the height and the width. We chose 20cm tall and 25cm long for the walls and the roof is 25cm x 25cm.

Then we copied a document and we wrote down the materials and how much we needed, and the height and the width.

We like this activity and want to do it again.

Basic Fact Boxes

This week for basic fact boxes I did my addition and subtraction. My challenge is to increase my speed in basic facts boxes and I got 2 mins 56sec and 5 milseconds. I got 1 wrong and the rest correct. I increase my speed and beat my highscore 3 mins and 15 secs.

Maths | Athletics Results.

We learned the average with the data sheet from athletics day.

Mean or average is adding up numbers and multiplying by how many numbers there are. The teams were red, green, yellow and blue. If a team is in first place they get 4 points, second 3 points, third 2 points and last 1 point.

We had to find the average from 182, 186, 174 and 182. We know that 182 is 20.2 so that means that 186 is 20.6. We did two averages, so 174 divided by 9= 19.333333333 but we need to take away the seven 3’s. 19.33 has two 3’s and the 3 at the end goes down and the number is now 19.3.

The averages of 182, 186, 174 and 182 is 20.2, 20.2, 20.6 and 19.3.

SSR Selfie

This week I chose a book The Twits. This is a fiction book which means it's a made up story. It's based on The Twits

I had to write down 3 events that happened in the story. The first event I wrote down was that the monkeys want to get revenge on Mr and Mrs Twit. The second event was that Mr and Mrs Twit likes pranking each other.

I found this book interesting and funny to read.

Reading | Novel Study

Fantastic Mr Fox is a Roald Dahl that steals food from Boggis, Bean and Bunce. Boggis, Bean and Bunce are three rich farms. Boggis has the chicken, Bunce has the goose and ducks, Bean has the turkeys and apples.

In chapter 13 Mr Fox dug right underneath Bunce's storage house with lots of ducks and geese. Mr Fox took a lot of geese and ducks and one fox was remaining and he was the smallest fox of them all and Badger was with them.

In chapter 14 Badger, Mr Fox and the one remaining fox. Badger was saying why does Mr Fox like stealing and they had a little talk and at the end of chapter 14 Badger understood what Mr Fox was saying, and they agreed on something.

The chapters in The Fantastic Mr Fox are funny and interesting that lots of children could read.

Athletics Day

This week we did athletics day, we played different fun games.

The three games we played were rob the nest, lily pad gladiator and long throw. Rob the nest is when they’re four teams and each team has a tagger. When I got tagged from a tagger I had to stand still until my team untagged me.

Lily pad gladiator is when two teams are together and one person from that team needs to jump to lily pad to lily pad and when the two people get in front of each other face to face they need to do rock, paper, scissor and who ever got out the next needs to do the same thing.

Long throw is when throwing a soft ball as far as I could and my team mate needs to beat my high score.

When we did sprints we did year 1’s to year 8’s. When we did our race I came thrid place and Naki and Fotu can 1 and 2.

I really want to do athletics day next year.

Comment Thread

This week I did a comment thread with Kahu. I commented on Kahu's fraction Practise, I asked him what fraction did he like and he replied to me what he like and asked me the same question and I replied to that. We replied to each other four times.

I want to do another comment with someone else.

Manaiakalani Film Festival

This week we went to Sliva Park for our film festival. There were lots of school there like Tamaki Primary, Tamaki College, Pt England, Glen Innes School, Ruapotaka School, Glen Taylor and others.

Screenplay

Screenplays are scripts that are converted into speeches and actions only.

The actors names are in the centre and in capitial letters. The actors sentence are under the actors names. The parts with actions are moved to the left a little bit with brackets.

In screenplays the scenes are written on the right in capitial letter. Screenplays have short sentences, the lines don't need speech marks because it could help what tone to use.

Knowing how to write a screenplay is very inportant because if the actor doesn't have their lines, the movie would be bad.

Maths | Addtion, Subtraction/Money

This week for maths we got a partner and showed each other what work we did from week 1 and week 2.

The activity I showed my partner was how to convert or measure and he showed me how to add. In measurement it has four different types of measurements they are ( mm, cm, m and km)

In addition and subtraction the symbol that we use is the (plus and the subtraction symbol + - ) Adding is when you get numbers and add them up like 5+6=11, and subtraction is like 10-7=3.

In week two the activity I showed was time and my partner's one was money. In time there are units of time and 3 different types of time like analogue, digital and 24 hour time. The units of time are ( seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks , months e.g)

Money uses the place value system and in New Zealand they use the 100’s place value system. In New Zealand they use cents and dollar. The dollars are ( 5$, 10$, 20$, 50$ and 100$) The cents are ( 10c, 20c, 50c

I learned a lot about addition and subtraction and money. My partner was the best teacher and I was the best student.

Kiwi Sports | Touch Rugby

This week for touch rugby we learned more basic skills.

The first skills we did was planting the ball and initiating the touch.  To plant the ball is when I get touched. Then I place the ball on the ground and move forward. Initiating is when I have to touch the person before they touch me so they know.

Then we did activity where we had to see how much balls we can get. The teams were bibs vs non bibs. The people that has a ball needed to run and the people that doesn't have a ball they have to tag a person that has one.

After that we did another activity where two attackers verses one defender. I had to get the person thats defending to be committed to me. How to get them committed is when they move their shoulder, so I to pass it to my teammate to get the try.

I really like touch rugby and want to do it again next week.

Inquiry | Experiment

This week for inquiry we did some experimenting. We had to see which material that can absorbent lots of water.

First we had to get a tote tray, 100 millilitre of water, add five drops of blue dye, and get our materials.

The material was stone, sand, cotton, paper towels, nappy brand 1 and 2. Then we had to get the materials and get a glass for the stone or sand and way them up to 5 grams.

My group and I picked up stones and we placed the rocks inside of the the glass. After we got the tote tray and poured the water in the glass.

Then we pored out the water and pored it in a measuring glass to see how much water was absorbed and not absorbed.

Lastly we had to type our results in our recording sheet. My group and I's results were 3 millilitre was absorbed and 97 millilitre was not absorbed.

I liked doing this activity and I learned a lot about how materials can absorb water.

Formal and Informal language

Formal is times when rules need to be followed and informal is when rules don't need to be followed.

Formal language is: hello, greeting, how are you, want to, do not. Informal language is: sup, G, wanna, don't, let's go.

Formal situations is: meetings, announcements, assembly, funeral. Informal situations are: park, at home, at a field, playing a game.

Hazard and Risk | Safety Plan

For inquiry we did an activity on safety plans. We had to choose a sport to do our safely plans.
The sport we chose was soccer.

Next we wrote down the class level, how many helpers, how many students can play and the location.
We had to write all kinds of consequences, for example: the consequence can be broken bones,
cuts or bruises. Then we wrote down different kinds of risks and hazards.

After that we wrote down how we could prevent it. Then we also wrote down who's responsible for it.
The last one is the emergency plan just in case of an injury.

Rewriting

A rewrite of a story and changes them to make a new story from the original story.

The changes are a snake to an alligator living in an underwater house and the gruffalo’s favoritve food is alligator cake.

The changes was the snake was living in a log pile house. The gruffalo likes scrambled snakes. The first change was the snakes to an alligator, the second change was the alligator living in an underwater house and the last change was the gruffalo likes alligator cake instead of scrambled snake.

Making connections

Making connections is when you use text to self, text text and text to world.

Text to self is when writing a text from the book and think of something the same as what the text is, for
example in the story the gruffalo the mouse almost died. My text to self is that I nearly died in the Skyline
Rotorua Luge when me and my dad nearly skid off the track.

Text to text is when getting a text and find a book that is kind of the same, for example the mouse lies to
the animal to make them think they would get eaten by a gruffalo, the text to text is that pinocchio also
lied to get away for his problems.

Text to world is when taking a text and finding something bad that's happening in the world that is kind of
the same as the text, for example the mother squirrel tells her childern a story about the gruffalo and the
mouse. The text to world is that mothers tell stories to their childern so they can go to sleep.

Time | Rounding

Rounding is a skill in math that uses addition and division. Rounding means to find the
nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and more.
Addition and divison are both strategys the are used for rounding. To round, A person
has to find out the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers for example: 12346 then,
add them, 16 is the answer.
After, divide the number by count how many numbers you’ve got, so 16 divided by 5 is
3.1. So 3.1 is the mean.
Here the rounding part comes in so if the numbers are 5-9 they are called high five
and the numbers that are 1-4 they are called four floors. Look for the last digit, so 1
will be on the four floor. After that, rounding it to the nearest ten so 1 would become a
zero because it rounds to the nearest ten, so my answer is 3.
Rounding can help others to add and divide to make maths easy or hard depending on ]
how good you are at it you are.

Mean, Median and Mode skipping rope

Time is a event in the past, future and present

The task was to figure out what how long whould it take for 50 skips 5 times.

Mean is when you get a bunch of numbers then you add them up and count how many numbers you got and divide them that’s mean or another word average.

Median is when you put your numbers in order from least to greatest then you circle the number in the middle if there is an even amount of numbers you circle the even amount of numbers then add those numbers and divide them by two.

Mode is when you make the numbers to the least to greatest then you see if there is the same number if you more number that are the same they are the mode.

L.I. investigate units of time.

Inferring

For reading we learned about inferring.

We did two activities. The first activity is fact and opinion. We wrote facts for each character in the story and wrote down the opinions. For example the fox was afraid when he saw the gruffalo, the opinions the fox is “afraid”.

The second activity is character trait. The character trait is that we had to replace the green writing and write down information from the story and my inference.

We wrote who we are, what gender they are, what story they come from, the characteristics of the character, what kind of person they are, an example of what person they are is that the snake is fearful. Then we wrote a summary of the story. For example the snake is fearful and eager.

Inferring is using clues in the text and my prior knowledge to help my understanding of the text.

L.I To infer

Setting Description

Setting description is created with an image of what a character’s place looks like, sounds like, smells like and feels like.

Looks like, is what the background is. For example the snake house looks like logs and grass.

Sounds like, is what the sound of a character or the place. For example the snake surroundings sounds like hissing snakes.

Smells like, is what the smell of a character or their surroundings. For example, the snake's place smells like mold .

Feels like, describes the feel of something. For example the log feels prickly.

Risk Assessment

LI: to assess the likelihood
LI: to assess consequences

This week we learned about assessing risk.

We had to assess risk from then. There are five risk definitions. They are low, likely, possible, elevated and extreme.

The first task was that we had to pick a number out to 1 to 5. There were fifteen questions and my group and I did a discussion of what number we should pick to see if it was correct, almost or incorrect my group and I did a vote.

After voting each question we got two correct answers, two incorrect answers, and the rest was almost. Then we corrected our answer and did the next task. The next task was we had to write our own situation from 1 to 5. After that we mixed up the answer and deleted those numbers.

This task was hard but we worked together and finished the task.

Knowledge Hazards and Risks

For inquiry we were learning about hazards and risk.

First we did activities. The first activity was to playing four corners.

We had to go to a corner, the corners were spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts and the person had to pick a card if it was spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts. The last two people had to guess if the card is red or black.

The second activity is octopus. The two people that are in it had to say something and the person had to run to the end, and if they got tagged they had to be an octopus.

Next we had to list down names of hazards for each category (School, home, community, sports).

Lastly, we had to come up with some risks for our hazards.

Owl Character Description

Character descriptions create a picture of a characters appearance, experiences and personality

Appearance is describing what the face, hair, body and their chothes.
Experiences is when you describe where they live, who are their friends, special interests, hobbies or talent, secrets and special achievements.
Personality is what kind of person they are, do they behave, what do say and what makes them interesting or different.
Character description uses figurative language with hidden messages and literal language which is straight to the point.

Visualise

Visualise is when you know what the book or story would look like by making a image in your head.

Visualise is a strategy is where you listen to what you think the book would look like and you can draw it in six boxes.

Stories can be told by using drawings like the nogard or gruffalo you can listen to instructions or listen to the story and try and draw what you think what it is.

Swimming Lessons

For kiwi sport we learned about swimming skill. The skills are: safe pool entry, streamline, float board, dolphin dive and get the toy.

Our swimming teacher was Shanti, she taught lots about swimming and safety.

First we learnt how to get in the pool safely.

The next skill we did was streamline it took a while to get a hang of it then I succeeded.
Then skill was float board I started swimming all the way to the end and back.
After that we did dolphin diving it was hard but I tried doing it.
Lastly Shanti trew a toy into the water an we had to collect it and bring it back.

I had fun swimming around the pools.

Puntuation Marks

This week for writing we did a punctuation challenge.

I had to write correct punctuated sentences. I had to see how few sentences will it take to use all of the following punctuation marks: capital letters, full stop, exclamation marks, question mark, comma, apostophe, speech marks, brackets, colon, semicolons and slash.

I wrote eight sentences with some of the same punctuation marks. On my first sentence I got  five punctuation mark and the rest I got: 6,7 and 5 puntuation mark.

I finished all the puntuation marks in eight sentences.

I struggled while doing this activity but I succeeded at the end of it.

Word problems and strategies

I learned about word problems and strategies. We had to figure out strategies to solve answers. For example 476-123, you use: written algorithm, number line and place value.

The first question was 84 - 7 we used written algorithm, number line, spitting numbers and counting backwards . We figure the number is 77.

The second number was 1.5-0.885 we used: written algorithm, number line and place value we figured out the number was 0.615.

The third number was 30 divided by 5. The strategies we used was; number line, multilication and skip counting 5. The answer was 5 because you can use 5x tables and count back in five.

The last question was 24 divided by 4 \ 16 divided by 4. We used: grouping with tens, skip count in 4's, number lines and multilication. The answer was 6 and 4.

Explain The Idioms

This week for reading we did explain the idiom.

We did three videos of three idioms. The first idiom was crack a book. I threw a book and Naki told me to crack a book. Crack a book means open a book and study.

The second idiom was rip off. I went to Naki and tried buying a book but it was expensive and I said what a rip off. Rip off means that something's too expensive for someone.

The third idiom was second-to-none. I said hi to Naki and he said hi back then we did backflips and I said your second-to-none. second-to-none means that someone's the best.

We had fun make videos of the three idioms.

Food Storage and Preservation

Today I learned about the text types. The text types are: recount, narrative, explanation, information report, procedural and persuasive.

The first book I chose was Canning with kids, I chose recount because the author tells the audience about what happened to themselves. The next book I chose was The Dippy Dinner Drippy and I chose narrative because it was telling a story to entertain people.

The third book I chose was Poha-A clever way of storing food and it was an information report because it was telling information about something.

The other books I chose are Love food hate waste and Food storage. Love food hate waste is a procedural. Procedural is when the author tells the audience how to do something. Food storage is a persuasive.

Persuasive is when the author attempts to convince the audience to believe something or do something, explanation is when the author tells the audience how something works.

I learned a lot about text types but it took me a while to figure out the text type.

Tenses

Tenses are the three things that tell about an action. There are 12 different tenses.

The three things that tell about an action are time. Past is something that has already happened. Present is something that is happening at the time of something that has not happened.

Continuance includes: simple and continuous. Simple is one thing and continuous is still going on.

Perfect is a complete action. It is not the same as past. But, something can be in the past but not completed.

The 12 different tenses help us with understanding what type of tenses to use.
